Take a lengthy stroll through the town of Fort Myers Beach, which stretches for miles on the Gulf of Mexico, and marvel at the varied surroundings. You’ll find bars, restaurants, boutiques, live music, and water sports activities at Times Square and on the pier. Further away from town, you can enjoy the relaxing tranquility of virtually pristine sections of beach. The gently sloping shore at Fort Myers Beach provides a perfect day at the seaside, especially for families with small children. You should also see out the day on the beach: Fort Myers’ southwest-facing location offers you a stunning backdrop at sunset.
The American way of life
As sand is part of the beach, so shopping is part of America’s DNA. Americans love to shop, and the city of Fort Myers offers you almost endless opportunities to share the experience. At the Miromar Outlets open-air shopping mall, you’ll find around 140 stores selling international brands. Sanibel Outlets is another outlet center in the immediate vicinity of Fort Myers. Traditional covered shopping malls, such as the Gulf Coast Town Center and the Edison Mall, are enjoyable places to visit, even on one of the few rainy days. You’ll also encounter the Americans’ love of sport almost everywhere in Fort Myers, especially in spring. Traditionally, the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins, both Major League Baseball teams, complete their spring training in the city, including playing numerous test games against other professional teams. If you want to be active yourself, you’ll always find a little piece of green to swing the iron on the 130 golf courses in Fort Myers.
Sanibel Island
Sanibel Island lies directly off the Fort Myers coast and, thanks to the stiff breeze at Lighthouse Beach, offers outstanding conditions for a variety of water and wind sports. A much calmer pastime is “shelling”—the traditional collection of shells. The island has the largest abundance of seashells in the United States. You can learn all about the more than 400 different types in the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. An absolute highlight is twilight, when the sunset transforms the Gulf of Mexico into a fascinating sea of colors.
Off into the wilderness
From marshlands to mangrove forests—the UNESCO World Heritage Site has a unique fauna and is unsurpassed in its biodiversity. You should definitely plan a day trip to the Everglades during your stay in southwest Florida. The largest subtropical wilderness area in the USA spans two million acres and extends from Lake Okeechobee in the north to the southernmost tip of the Florida Peninsula. The tropical climate is home to a unique variety of species: alligators, manatees, sea turtles, dolphins, and stingrays. Explore the legendary swamps in a kayak or airboat, on your own on one of the many hiking trails or discover the mangroves along the coast on a boat tour.
Take a stroll along Naples Pier
Erected in 1888, Naples Pier extends about 300 meters (1,000 ft) into the Gulf of Mexico and once played an important role in the settlement and development of the city. In those days, Naples could only be accessed by water—the pier was therefore the most important access point at that time. Today the complex is a popular destination close to Fort Myers. Here vacationers can watch anglers at work and enjoy a fantastic sunset.
Shopping on Fifth Ave
Renowned for its luxury lifestyle and sophisticated ambiance, travelers to the destination indulge in dining experiences from farm-to-table concepts to culinary classics. A globally inspired arts and culture scene offers a full schedule of live theatre, opera and philharmonic events, complemented by a line-up of museums that offer fine arts, historical artifacts, and interactive exhibits for the young and young-at-heart. Unspoilt beaches
With more than 30 miles of soft, white-sand beaches, visitors to Florida’s Paradise Coast enjoy the fun of a lively beach scene or that perfect secluded spot. North of Naples, beach access at Clam Pass Park is ideal for family beach days or paddling in the calm waters of this 35-acre coastal habitat and preserve. Visitors experience unspoiled beaches, surf fishing, shelling, picnicking and even scuba diving along the natural hard-bottom reef of Delnor Wiggins Pass State Park. The area abounds in birdwatching opportunities where sightings of eagles, ospreys and owls and is a great location to witness the migratory shore birds in the Fall months.
Marco Island beach
Marco Island is one of the largest barrier islands that Florida has to offer. Marco Island beach is one of the most beautiful beaches to visit when on vacation in Fort Myers. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, it offers everything a vacationer could wish for: crystal-clear waters, romantic sunsets, and water sports. If you want, you can drink a sundowner in one of the numerous bars or look out for dolphins when swimming. If you’ve had enough of sunbathing, you can learn all about the history of this small island at the Marco Island Historical Museum.
Keewaydin Island
Just between Naples and Marco Island lies the barrier island of Keewaydin Island, which boasts eight miles of untouched beach that is only accessible by boat. It is also the only pet-friendly beach in the Naples/Marco Island area, so you can spend the beach day relaxing with your faithful companion.

Cash & credit cards
The US dollar is the official currency of the United States. It is common to pay even smaller amounts by credit card. All major credit cards are therefore accepted. You can withdraw cash from ATMs using your credit card and PIN.
Climate & when to travel
No state in the USA experiences more sunny days than Florida, which is therefore often referred to as the Sunshine State. Florida registers more than 300 days of sunshine a year. Thanks to the breeze from the ocean, the summers are not too hot and even the winters stay pleasantly warm at around 25 degrees Celsius. Fort Myers is therefore ideal for a visit all year round. The sunniest months are March, April, and May. September is the wettest month of the year, with an average of nine rainy days. The period from June to November is considered to be the hurricane season, when there is generally the possibility of tropical storms.

Driving
In general, road traffic in the USA is more relaxed than in Germany. Nevertheless, there are some differences to watch out for: distances and speeds are measured in miles. The speed limit in Florida is 20 to 30 miles per hour (mph) in urban areas and 50 to 70 mph outside urban areas. The maximum speed limit in front of schools is usually 15 mph. Stationary school buses must not be overtaken.
At intersections, the rule is that the vehicle that stops first at the intersection may continue first. A “right before left” rule is rather unusual in the USA. Turning right on a red light is generally allowed, but only after you have stopped and are not obstructing anyone. If this is not allowed, a corresponding traffic sign will make that clear.

Entry & visa
For travelers with German citizenship, visa-free entry to the USA is possible for up to 90 days for tourist reasons. To this end, an ESTA application must be submitted and approved online before you travel. However, the application does not guarantee entry at the airport. The voltage in the USA is 110 volts. Most devices these days are designed for use with European and American voltages. Such devices have a label that specifies the operating voltage (e.g., 110-240V~/50-60Hz). In this case, all you need is an adapter to connect the device to American sockets.

Tipping
